When it comes to skin cancer, you have a lot of power to prevent problems!

Protecting your skin from the sun is one of the easiest ways to do this.  Try to sit in the shade as much as possible, this is particularly important between the hours of 10 am to 2 pm.  This is the time period when the sun’s rays are the strongest. Don’t get caught on the ski slopes, out on the water or on a cloudy day without sunscreen, because you can get a sunburn!

What about your clothing? Sun protective clothing, such as long shirts, pants or wide brimmed hats and sunglasses are helpful. However, looking for clothing with specially woven fabrics that give additional protection from the sun are a bonus.  The level of sun protection in fabrics is measured as UPF (ultraviolet protection factor), not the sunscreen SPF (sun protection factor).

One of the most commonly known protection methods, you can apply broad-spectrum sunscreen!  The best type of sunscreen will offer water resistance as well as a SPF of 30 or more.  You shouldn’t just apply sunscreen when you’re going to the beach, though!  Applying sunscreen every day before leaving your home can go a long way towards protecting yourself from harmful rays.  Some sunscreens are more cosmetically elegant. I hope you find a sunscreen that you love to use daily. Sunscreen should be reapplied every two hours, or after sweating or swimming.  Sunscreens come in a wide variety of types including creams, lotions, sprays and gels.

A few more responsible ways to love on your skin are:

  • Making and keeping regular dermatology appointments
  • Performing self-examinations, making special appointments for any concerning skin lesions
  • And completely avoid the use of tanning beds. Multiple research studies have demonstrated the skin cancer risks of tanning beds!  The appearance of tanned skin can be achieved by using a self-tanning product or by getting a spray tan.  Fake tans are the best tans.
